Biography
Stiff Kittens first came together in the mid 1990’s at the height of Britpop.
Gary Law Sean Birch and Steven Price were originally in a covers band playing the pubs in South Wales with a drummer named Colin Turner.
Turner quit the band in early 1995 leaving the others without a drummer.
An advert was placed in the music press and after a few non starters, Lisa Herbert walked in an blew the competition away.
They decided on the name Stiff Kittens after Gary spotted it in a biography about Joy Division as a name they had once considered.
Stiff Kittens then began touring relentlessly throughout 1995 and ‘96 bedding the new lineup and with Gary writing original songs.
In 1997 they entered Big Noise Sound Recorders in Cardiff to record what eventually became their first album “Progress” produced by Manics producer Greg Haver.
The album is a mish mash of different styles of music. Acoustic ballads, heavy metal and indie rock.
They played gigs relentlessly all over the country from Scotland to Dover and were close to burn out. Someone was bound to crack and Sean eventually announced that he was quitting.
The band quickly found a replacement in Richard Murray. A close friend of the band anyway and an easy fit.
A month after his recruitment they embarked on a successful tour of Northern France.
The millennium came and went and Stiff Kittens began recording their second album “Won’t Reach the Fifth.
They continued touring but seemed to be in ever decreasing circles. Eventually, burned out and disillusioned, they broke up in 2002.
Years passed and Gary and Steven continued recording together. In 2017, Richard reached out to the others to simply get together and play to see if there was any of the magic left.
Steven declined to be involved and so it was that Gary, Richard and Lisa began performing together as Stiff Kittens. They play the old songs and some new ones too.
Every year their live appearances get better and better.!
The surprising thing is that when looking for gigs, venues have contacted the band instead of the other way around.
They have decided that their friendship and loyalty to each outweighs anything else.
They love each other and support each other
